Ramadan Moon Painting
It’s time to get the paint, paintbrushes and flour out. Yes, flour! The secret to getting your moon have that rough, bumpy texture will be flour.
The moon has great significance in Islam, primarily because our Islamic calendar is based on the moon’s cycles. And the moon has even more significance to us in Ramadan, as we are that much more acutely aware of it’s cycle particularly at the begin and end of the month when we try and sight the hilal.
With this artwork, there are a few different elements and techniques used which make it that much more interesting.
What you’ll need:
Grey paint (or black and white) - please note that the colour of the grey does darken as it dries, so I recommend a light grey.
Flour
Assorted paints (from dark to light of the colour of your choosing)
Star stickers (optional)
So how do we put it together?
Add a few teaspoons of flour to grey paint for the moon. You’ll find the moon template in our download. The thicker the mixture is, the more texture your moon will have. Add more or les flour and/paint as desired. Leave this to dry (this make take quite a few hours - or let dry overnight).
Grab a white piece of paper and paint a gradient background of any colours of your choosing. With our painting, we decided to go with different hues of blue.
Cut out the masjid silhouette which you can find in the download below. (We printed ours on thicker cardboard paper, this makes it more sturdy if you’d like to make a 3D version like we did)
Once all these 3 elements are dry, you can assemble your artwork. Place the moon on the gradient painting (towards the bottom) and layer the masjid on top. It is best if the masjid covers part of your moon. We added some foam to the back of our moon and masjid to give it a 3D look.
